10 Fun Summer Activities For Your Frugal Family

Want to enjoy the summer with your family without spending big bucks? No problem! Here are ten frugal and fun activities for your family to try this summer.

Don’t forget your camera!

1. Strawberry Picking

I remember when I was a kid, my parents took me strawberry pickin’. I’ve only gone a few times in my life but those memories have stuck with me all these years. There are so many benefits of picking your own fruit: you save money, you get to see where your food comes from and you keep farmers in business all while you get to enjoy the memories with your family. Strawberry picking season is usually mid-June and doesn’t last very long, so make sure to squeeze it in before it’s over!

2. Canoeing or Paddle-boating

What better way to enjoy the summer with your family than to pack up a picnic and head to the lake. Most public lakes offer canoeing or paddle-boating. While on the like, there might be some cool wildlife to see- ducks, cranes, turtles and alligators. Don’t forget sunscreen!

3. Go to a Dog Park

Get your fuzzy friend in on the summer action and visit a dog park. The first time I took my dog, Belle, to a dog park, she ran around like a kid in a candy store. She was a complete and utter wild lady. If you are thinking of taking your pup to a dog park, just make sure they are up to date on their vaccinations and all the other dogs seem friendly.

4. Camp Out in your Own Back Yard

When you have little kids, packing up and going camping in the wilderness can be a nightmare. Luckily, you can create the same atmosphere in your own backyard with the help of a tent, fire-pit and lots of ingredients to make s’mores! Now, that 3am bathroom trip isn’t so bad!

5. Sign Up For a Library Program

Not so much into the outdoors? Visit your local library! Oftentimes they have reading summer reading programs for kids that will award them for reading a certain amount of books.

6. Learn Something New

Ever wanted to learn how to play an instrument? Make it a family affair and have weekly recitals with all the new songs your family learns.

7. Go to A Flea Market

Go on a treasure hunt! Flea markets are not every expensive and you can find all kinds of cool and unusual stuff. I mean, where else can you find a Willie Nelson lampshade?

8. Hit up Local Festivals

Where I live, there is a festival for almost everything in the surrounding counties- the Azalea Festival, the Watermelon Festival, the Spot Festival, the Trout Festival… you get the point. Each time a festival rolls around, visit it and take in some of your local culture.

9. Volunteer Your Time

Volunteering to help others is a great way to demonstrate to your children how to show compassion and grow to be caring adults.

10. Make a Movie

While you’re doing all these fun summer activities, capture the precious moments and create a video. Your computer most likely already has a movie editing program (Windows Movie Make or iMovie). Don’t worry, you don’t have to be Steven Spielberg to make an awesome movie. Just be creative and let your content guide you. Your family will treasure it for years to come.
